Tool reference

Every Praxis MCP tool, whether it reads or writes, and what it does: tickets, coordination, updates, notes, search and fetch.

How the tools behave

  • A connection is bound to its projects. Tools act on that project, so no tool needs a project argument.
  • With a multi-project connection, pass the optional project key. praxis_meta lists the allowed projects.
  • Some clients prefix tool names with the server name, for example praxis.board.
  • Read tools are marked read-only. Write tools that can overwrite or remove work are marked destructive. See Permissions.

Tickets

ToolAccessWhat it does
boardReadThe board as compact lines grouped by status, with a count per status. Lists up to 25 per status by default (per_status, max 200). Done is left out unless asked.
search_issuesReadSearch by text and filters: status, board, type, priority, epic, no_epic, assignee, unassigned, updated_since. availability takes ready, active, held, blocked or stale.
get_issueReadFull detail for one ticket: description, links, blockers, GitHub branches and PRs, comments, attachments. Newest 20 comments by default.
dependenciesReadThe whole dependency picture: waves of work that can start, what each unlocks, circular dependencies, and tickets blocked by nothing linked.
create_issueWriteCreate a ticket. Takes points, epic, board, blocked_by, blocked_reason. idempotency_key makes retries return the same ticket.
update_issueWriteChange fields on a ticket. Changing status moves the card. if_version refuses the write if someone changed it first.
comment_issueWriteAdd a Markdown comment. @Full Name notifies that person if they have access.
link_issuesWriteLink two tickets: blocks, relates or duplicates.
unlink_issuesWriteRemove a link. Removing a blocks link stops a dependency that turned out not to exist.
bulk_updateWriteApply one change to up to 500 tickets: status, priority, type, board, assignee or points. Returns per-ticket results.

Coordination

ToolAccessWhat it does
praxis_metaReadYour role, project binding and expiry, plus the boards, epics, users, statuses, types and priorities. Call it first.
next_taskWriteSelects and claims the highest-priority ready ticket in one step. Defaults: candidates in To Do, moved to In Progress, 60-minute lease.
claim_issueWriteClaim a named ticket. release: true hands it back and requires an outcome. Returns 409 already_claimed if someone else holds it.
changes_sinceReadWhat changed since a cursor, one row per ticket. Pass cursor: "head" the first time. Up to 100 events per call by default, max 500.
metricsReadMeasured cycle time (median and p85), time per status, tickets and points finished per week, and the ten slowest tickets.
mention_targetsReadPeople who can be mentioned on one ticket, update or note. Returns IDs and full names.

Updates

ToolAccessWhat it does
list_updatesReadThe Updates feed or draft queue. Tabs: latest, shipped, in_progress, decision, week, drafts.
get_updateReadOne update with media, source tickets, feedback, related updates and its current version.
update_candidatesReadRecently completed tickets without an update. A reminder, not proof of release.
update_commentsReadOlder feedback on an update.
create_updateWriteDraft an update. Never publishes or notifies anyone.
edit_updateWriteEdit an update using its latest version. Omitted fields stay unchanged.
publish_updateWritePublish a reviewed draft. notify must be set to choose whether followers are alerted.
comment_on_updateWriteAdd feedback to a published update. Supports @Full Name mentions.
edit_update_mediaWriteCaption or remove an image or video on an update.

Notes

ToolAccessWhat it does
list_notesReadNotes this connection can access. Tabs: all, mine, shared, pinned.
get_noteReadOne note with its checklist, context links and comments.
note_commentsReadEarlier comments on a note.
create_noteWriteCreate a private note for the key's owner, with priority, pin, colour and up to 100 checklist items.
edit_noteWriteEdit a note using its latest version. tasks replaces the whole checklist.
comment_on_noteWriteComment on a note. Supports @Full Name mentions.

Search and fetch

These two follow the shape ChatGPT's deep research and company knowledge expect.

ToolAccessWhat it does
searchReadSearch tickets across every project the connection can see. Matches keys, titles, descriptions and comments.
fetchReadRead one ticket in full by key, with its https://praxis.theorem-labs.com/KEY-123 link.
