How Praxis works
The core ideas: organizations, projects, boards, tickets, epics, links, claims, outcomes and the availability meter.
The building blocks
- Organization
- Holds its people, projects and settings. You can belong to more than one.
- Project
- One board of tickets with a permanent key, such as
WEB. - Board (component)
- A group of tickets inside a project, such as frontend or backend. It is not a separate project.
- Ticket
- One piece of work, with a key like
WEB-42. - Epic
- A ticket of type epic that other tickets sit under. Each ticket has at most one parent epic.
Statuses
Every project has the same six columns.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Backlog | Work to plan. |
| To Do | Work ready to pick up. |
| In Progress | Work under way. |
| Blocked | Waiting on another ticket, a person or a decision. |
| Under Review | Waiting for review. |
| Done | Finished. |
Links between tickets
| Link | Meaning |
|---|---|
| blocks | One ticket must finish before the other can start. The only link with a direction. |
| relates | The tickets are connected. No order is implied. |
| duplicates | The tickets describe the same work. |
A blocks link to an unfinished ticket makes the waiting ticket unavailable. See Tickets for the three kinds of blocker.
Status, assignee and claim
These are three different facts about a ticket.
- Status
- Which column the ticket is in.
- Assignee
- The person whose ticket it is.
- Claim
- A time-limited lease held by an AI agent while it works. The default is 60 minutes.
- When an agent claims an unassigned ticket, the person who owns the agent's connection becomes the assignee.
- A ticket that already has an assignee keeps them.
- Releasing a claim hands back the lease. The assignee stays.
Outcomes
An agent that releases a claim must write an outcome. It says what changed, what was considered and rejected, and what the next reader needs to know.
The outcome is saved as a comment on the ticket and appears in the change feed. Search reads comments, so outcomes are searchable.
The availability meter
The bar under the header splits open work by whether it can be started. These groups cut across the status columns.
| Slice | Means |
|---|---|
| Ready | To Do or Backlog, nothing in the way, and no claim. This is what an agent's next_task hands out. |
| In progress | In Progress or Under Review. |
| Claimed | Claimed by an agent but not started. |
| Blocked | Something is in the way. |
| Stopped moving | In Progress or Under Review with no column change for a week. Offered from the same control. |
